Task 1

You are going to read the text aloud. You have 1.5 minutes to read the text silently, and then be ready to read it aloud. Remember that you will not have more than 2 minutes for reading aloud.

One day a young man who lived near the lake in a small American town asked himself, “Why can’t people ski on water if they can ski on snow?” With his brother’s help he constructed several models of skis to test his ideas. He experimented on the local lake for a few days and created skis suitable for the water. This happened in 1922. The young man, who was only 18 at that time, didn’t patent his invention. However, he performed a lot of shows across the country that made him and the sport of water skiing popular. Later, he was recognized as the creator of a new sport – water skiing.

Water skiing equipment has been greatly improved since that time, and the number of people who enjoy this sport is growing in many countries.

Model answer

Electronic assistant: What grade are you in?

Student: Well, I am a pupil (student) of the ninth grade (form). (I am in the ninth grade. I study in the ninth form.)

Electronic assistant: How many classes a day do you usually have?

Student: You know, as I study 5 days a week, I have got a very busy schedule /ˈʃedjuːl/ (timetable). I usually have 7 lessons on Monday, Tuesday and Thursday. And 6 lessons on the other days. (on Friday and Wednesday)

Electronic assistant: What sports facilities are there in your school?

Student: Obviously, we have got a big gym on the ground floor and a shooting gallery in the basement. Also, there are some sports grounds behind the school. As a rule, when the weather is warm and sunny, we have our PT (PE) classes there.

Electronic assistant: What is your school uniform like?

Student: To tell the truth, it is a sore point (больной вопрос) for me because I don’t really like my school uniform. The girls of our school usually wear brown or navy blue dresses with white collars and black aprons. And we all lookrather dull. You know, like nuns in the convent/ˈkɒnvənt/. Girls are not allowed to wear trousers. As for the boys, they wear dark trousers and jackets and white shirts.

Electronic assistant: What school events do you have during the school year?

Student: Let me think. First of all, two important events are school assemblies at the beginning and at the end of the school year when we greet the first-form students and say “Good bye” to our school leavers. Secondly, our school takes part in different regional sports and music contests during the year. (And as a rule, our teams often get prizes and awards.) Besides, various themed parties and subject Olympiads are held in our school.

Electronic assistant: What would you like to improve in your school?

Student: In my opinion, we should change our school uniform. I would like to wear a more fashionable one. It must be practical, convenient and made of natural fabrics at the same time. (Why not to add some bright colours to make our school life happier?) Also, teachers should cut down the amount of homework they give us every day (give us less homework). Last but not least, I would like to have a wide choice of fruit, healthy snascks and hot lunches in our school canteen.

Electronic assistant: This is the end of the survey. Thank you very much for your cooperation.

Task 3

You are going to give a talk about public holidays in Russia. You will have to start in 1.5 minutes and will speak for not more than 2 minutes.

New Year's Day in Belgorod

Remember to say:

  • what public holidays are celebrated in Russia;
  • what your favourite public holiday is, and why you like it;
  • how your favourite public holiday is celebrated in your city, town or village.

You have to talk continuously.

Model answer

Now I am going to talk about public holidays in Russia. (вступительная фраза)

Well, I guess you know that in Russia we have got lots of public holidays. For instance, New Year’s Day, Women’s Day, Victory Day, Independence Day and others. (2)

—  As for me, I like New Year’s Day best of all because it is time when everything looks magic like in a fairy tale. I enjoy hunting for (= looking for) the presents for my friends and relatives (for my nearest and dearest). And, of course, I like to get presents, too. My mum and dad always surprise me with unusual gifts on New Year’s Day.  Besides, I can eat plenty of sweet tangerines which are my favourite fruit. They are the symbol of New Year’s celebration in Russia. What is more, I like the warm atmosphere when our family gets together to see New Year in. (7)

—  After midnight children and adults of our town gather in the town’s square. They hold hands in a large circle around a beautifully decorated New Year’s Tree. They sing songs and wish each other happiness and health in the coming year. Lots of people drink champagne, pull crackers, light (shoot) fireworks and fly Chinese lanterns making a wish. (4)

All in all, I think holidays are an essential part of our life and we can’t do without them. (заключительная фраза)
