Opinion Essay

Вступительная часть (the introduction)

Nowadays most people believe that public libraries are not so popular as they used to be in the previous years (some years ago / not long ago). However, there are fans that are still fond of going to public libraries from time to time (sometimes / occasionally). So, are they really important or could we live without them? (48)

— express your personal opinion

— express the opposing opinion

— explain why you don’t agree with the opposing opinion

Being a representative of generation Z, I strongly believe that public libraries will no longer exist in the nearest future. (20)

  1. In the age of modern technologies it is much more convenient to use different electronic devices for receiving (searching) necessary information.
  2. Going to the libraries is tedious /ˈtiːdiəs/ (boring) and time-consuming.
  1. Most of young people prefer reading e-books to hardbacks.

  1. In the age of modern technologies it is much more convenient to use different electronic devices for receiving necessary information because everyone has got a laptop, a smartphone or a tablet at their disposal. (35)
  2. Going to the libraries is tedious and time-consuming that is why if you stay at home, you can save your time and energy. For example, it will take you just a few seconds to browse the Internet and find lots of useful resources at hand. (45)
  3. Nowadays young people prefer reading e-books to hardbacks as they can take them whenever they go because these modern gadgets are easy to operate; they are lighter and take less space in the bag. (34)

  1. Libraries offer a quiet study environment.
  2. Libraries contain rare works (books) and publications (articles) of prominent authors (scientists).
  3. Libraries organize additional events such as live meetings with the authors of the books, story hours, and overnight stay.

(Make a conclusion)

  1. According to the reasons presented above, I would like to conclude that public libraries are losing their popularity at present. But it depends on you which source of information you would like to choose.  (34)
  2. To sum it up, I reckon that visiting a public library is a lap into the past. So, it is much better to keep up with the times using online resources. (31)

Sample answer

Nowadays most people believe that public libraries are not so popular as they used to be in the previous years. However, there are fans that are still fond of going to public libraries from time to time. So, can we do without them? (43)

Being a representative of generation Z, I strongly believe that public libraries will no longer exist in the nearest future. Firstly, in the age of modern technologies it is much more convenient to use different electronic devices for receiving necessary information because everyone has got a laptop, a smartphone or a tablet at their disposal Secondly, going to the libraries is time-consuming that is why if you stay at home, you can save your time and energy. For example, it will take you just a few seconds to browse the Internet and find lots of useful resources.  Moreover, nowadays young people prefer reading e-books to hardbacks as they can take them whenever they go. (157)

Nevertheless, there are people who are used to visiting libraries quite often because libraries offer a quiet study environment. Moreover, libraries organize additional events such as live meetings with the authors, presentations of new books, story hours, and overnight stay.  (197)

In my opinion, only at home you can arrange the best place where you can study, do your projects or get ready for exams. Also, it is not good for your health to stay the whole night in the library. (237)

So, according to the reasons presented above, I would like to conclude that public libraries are losing their popularity at present.  (258)

Hope you can do this task even better!

Good luck in your exam!

You have 20 minutes to do this task.

This summer we plan to go hiking with my parents.

Dear Tom,

Hi! Thanks for your letter. Sounds like you had a great time at the museum!

Actually, we don’t go to the museums very often. Last time our class visited the War Museum. It is a large battlefield. We saw different types of weapons of that period of time and even walked through a recreated war trench.

As my hobby is painting, I prefer visiting art galleries. My favourite museum is the State Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. Also, I dream to visit the Prado Museum in Spain someday. Such tours help to develop sense of beauty and broaden your horizons.

By the way, how long will the trip last? What are your plans for August? Do you intend to take part in dancing battles this summer?

Look forward to hearing from you.

Love,

Victoria (138)

Dear Tom,

I got your letter yesterday and decided to write back straightaway.

You asked me about how often our class visits museums. As a rule, we go there in spring and in autumn. Last autumn we visited a local museum in the open air. We saw an old mill. The guide told us about how our ancestors got flour. I’ve learnt lots of new things I’ve never known before. I think people obviously should visit such museums in order to get closer to the history of the region they live.

You know, I’m keen on detectives that’s why I’d like to visit the International Spy Museum in Washington.

By the way, when does your hiking trip start? Are you going to the ocean this summer? Will you take up surfing there?

Keep in touch.

Best wishes,

Valery  (142)
