Task 1.

Imagine that you are preparing a project with your friend. You have found some interesting material for the presentation and you want to read this text to your friend. You have 1.5 minutes to read the text silently, then be ready to read it out aloud. You will not have more than 1.5 minutes to read it.

People have enjoyed sports for thousands of years. Children, men and women play sports both for pleasure and for challenge. Every sport involves physical skill. Every sport has a set of rules that the players of the sport follow. In some sports one person competes against other individuals. Examples of these sports include boxing, tennis and so on. In many games one team competes against the other team.

People can go in for winter and summer sports. Summer sports are typical for warmer countries. Those who live in regions that experience cold winters have long enjoyed ice skating, skiing, and sledding. These activities have grown immensely in popularity over the years. Today thousands of resorts cater to the winter tourist trade, and millions of people each year take winter sports vacations.

Task 3.

Imagine that these are photos from your photo album. Choose one photo to present to your friend. You will have to start speaking in 1.5 minutes and will speak for not more than 2 minutes (12–15 sentences). In your talk remember to speak about:

  1. where and when the photo was taken
  2. what/who is in the photo
  3. what is happening
  4. why you keep the photo in your album
  5. why you decided to show the picture to your friend

You have to talk continuously, starting with: “I’ve chosen photo number …”

I've chosen photo number 2.

First of all, I should admit that winter is my favourite season and I try to spend a lot of time outdoors when the weather is not very frosty and cold. So, this picture was taken on a wonderful winter day in the local park. I usually go there with my friends at weekends.

Can you guess who is in the photo? Right, in the foreground of the picture you can see my best friends Dasha and Nastya. They are having fun playing snowballs. They are both in a good mood and laughing. In spite of the fact that it is winter, they are wearing light clothes. Nastya is wearing a red tracksuit and a hat that her granny has knitted for her. Dasha prefers to wear jeans wherever she goes. Also, she’s got a trendy white hat.

The ground is covered with plenty of fresh snow. In the background of the picture you can see bare trees which, I hope, don’t spoil the view.

You know, I keep this photo in my album because we are school-leavers and soon we’ll go to study in different towns that’s why I try to capture the best moments we spend together which will remind me of our friendship and school years.

I decided to show this picture to you because I want you to learn how cute my friends are and to tell you how much I will miss them after leaving school (how much they mean for me).

That’s all I wanted to say.

Task 4.

Study the two photographs. In 1.5 minutes be ready to compare and contrast the photographs:

  1. give a brief description of the photos (action, location)
  1. say what the pictures have in common
  1. say in what way the pictures are different
  1. say which of the ways of taking care of your health presented in the pictures you’d prefer
  1. explain why

You will speak for not more than 2 minutes (12–15 sentences). You have to talk continuously.

Picture 1

Now I will compare and contrast [kən´traːst] these two photos.

I’d like to stress out right from the beginning that lots of young people nowadays are concerned about healthy lifestyle. And these two photos prove that.

So, the theme which relates these photos is the way people take care of their health.

Let me start with the first picture which shows young people who are doing some exercises in the gym at the moment. They are walking on the treadmills. There is a screen in front of each person. I think it might be very convenient to watch the records of your walking speed, pulse and number of loosing calories. It seems to me that they are having their training in the evening when their working day is over.

Picture 2

As for the second picture you can see a young girl jogging in the city park. She is wearing a nice coral T-shirt and dark sports trousers. I guess the action is taking place in a warm summer morning because you can see bright spells of the sun on the emerald green grass and trees. The girl is very slender and looks very happy.

As I’ve already mentioned both pictures depict young people who are taking up sports to be in a good shape (to feel strong and healthy).  And this is the main similarity between them. Also both pictures show us cheerful people who really enjoy doing sports (who are doing sports with pleasure).

The most evident (obvious) difference between picture 1 and picture 2 is that in the first picture you can see a group of people doing work out indoors while in the second picture the girl is shown running out of doors on her own (alone).  The clothes people wearing in picture 1 are snow-white whereas the girl in picture 2 prefers bright colours.

In conclusion I would like to say that as I spend most of the day studying at school or at home, I would rather go jogging in the open air to avoid hypoxia [hai´pɔksiə].

So, to do regular exercises is better than to be a couch potato.

I’ve come to the end of my talk. Thank you for listening.

Task 1

Imagine that you are preparing a project with your friend. You have found some interesting material for the presentation and you want to read this text to your friend. You have 1.5 minutes to read this text silently, then be ready to read it out aloud. You will not have more than 1.5 minutes to read it.
No single person or culture invented the alphabet – it has evolved over centuries. In order to understand modern alphabets, we must take a trip back through time.

Archeologists have discovered cave paintings thousands of years old that document the first forms of alphabets. In fact, some of the oldest alphabetic symbols have been found in the Middle East more than 5,000 years ago.

One of the earliest forms of the alphabet was hieroglyphics. Hieroglyphics were single symbols that stood for entire words. Thousands of characters and symbols were used to represent the words, needs, and lives of early civilizations.

Memorizing of thousands of unique hieroglyphic symbols was a difficult task, so only the most highly educated priests and scholars were experts.

The Latin alphabet, also called the “Roman alphabet”, is the most widely used alphabetic writing system in the world today. This is the system on which the English alphabet is based.

Task 3

Imagine that these are photos from your photo album.

Choose one photo to present to your friend.

You will have to start speaking in 1.5 minutes and will speak for not more than 2 minutes (12–15 sentences). In your talk remember to speak about:

  • where and when the photo was taken

You have to talk continuously, starting with

I’ve chosen photo number…”

Sample answer (photo No 3)

I've chosen photo number 3.

I should say that a lot of amazing and curious things always happen around us daily.  Look at this picture, for example. It’s really fabulous, isn’t it? My mum took it two years ago when she was travelling around Italy.

In the foreground of the picture you can see a street performer. It looks like he is floating in the air. It’s unbelievable but he is not touching the ground. The man is wearing bright orange Hindu clothes that’s why I think he might be a yoga practitioner.  In front of him there is a little box for charity.

In the background of the picture there are some ruins of the ancient buildings. As my mum says it’s one of the most famous historical sights of Rome.

I keep this photo in my album because I was totally impressed by this unusual / fantastic / incredible / stunning / gimmick.

To tell the truth, I don’t really believe in the power of levitation. I’m sure it’s just a kind of illusion. I decided to show this photo to you because I’m eager to know if you have any idea how this trick works. (I decided to show this photo to you because I have always wanted to know the secrets of this performance and maybe together we find out the answer).

That’s all I wanted to say.

incredible [in´kredibl] –  невообразимый, потрясающий

levitation [levi´teiʃ(ə)n] – ощущение полета

to float [fləut] – плыть в воздухе, парить

to be eager [´i:ɡə] to do smth – сильно хотеть чего-то

Task 4

Study the photographs. In 1.5 minutes be ready to compare and contrast the photographs:

  • give a brief description of the photos (action, location)
  • say what the pictures have in common
  • say in what way the pictures are different
  • say which kind of the activities presented in the pictures you'd prefer
  • explain why

Sample answer

Photo 1

Now I am going to compare and contrast [kən´trɑ:st] these two photos. (start with this phrase)

Just at the beginning I would go as far as to say that lots of people are fond of dancing because it is a good way to express their feelings and emotions. And now let’s take a closer look at these two photos.

In the first picture you can see a group of people performing a folk dance on the stage. They are wearing nicely designed scarlet costumes embroidered with pearls and gold work.  I am fairly sure that they are performing one of the traditional Russian dances because the girls are wearing kokoshniks which are an integral part of Russian folk costumes (which are a typical head-dress of Russian folk costumes). It looks as if all dancers are in a good mood.

танго

Picture 2

In the second picture I’d like to draw your attention to the couple who might be dancing tango. The man looks very elegant in his black suit as well as his partner in a beautiful red dress. They seem to be showing some dramatic and complex figures.

The main similarity between picture 1 and picture 2 is that they both display / show / depict people who take up dancing. Another resemblance is that people in both pictures are wearing their stage costumes instead of their casual clothes.

The most obvious difference between picture 1 and picture 2 is the style of dances. I’m pretty confident that in picture 1 people are performing a folk dance, whereas picture 2 depicts a kind of ballroom dancing. What is more, in comparison to picture 1 where you can see a folk ensemble (a lot of people), picture 2 shows a partner dance (two people).

As for me, I would prefer to take up ballroom dancing because I am a hot-tempered person so this style of dancing with its speed and emotions will better reflect my character.

Summarizing, I may say that taking part into dancing activity is a good way of recreation.

That’s where I’d like to end.

Vocabulary

to embroider [im´brɔidə] – вышивать, украшать вышивкой

pearl [pɜ:l] – жемчуг

kokoshnik – кокошник

head-dress – головной убор

integral part [in´teɡr(ə)l] – неотъемлемая часть

folk dance [fəuk] – народный танец

ballroom dance – бальный танец

tango [´tæŋɡəu] – танго

couple [´kʌpl] – пара

ensemble [ɑ:n´sɑ:mb(ə)l] – ансамбль

to draw one’s attention – привлечь внимание

recreation [ˏrikri´eiʃn] – отдых

If you like the material, share it with those who might need it.

Good luck in your exam!
